Most of these pincushion cacti flower prolifically, making them good subjects for a collection. Some have fingerlike stems, but most Mammillaria are small, globular, and thickly covered with spines. Even when very young, the majority bear rings of beautiful flowers around the crown in spring or early summer with a second and some times a third flush of blooms later on. The seed pods are red. These 250 or so sun-loving cacti come from Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, the Southern US, Venezuela, and the West Indies.
