This particular rock out cropping is called "Diving board rock" just over the edge and out from
the Bright Angel Lodge canyon side.

I've heard a million stories why they do this but no one really knows.
I have heard every thing from warming their feathers to letting the ultra violet rays from the sun kill the bugs and mites in their feathers.
